As we grow as leaders we go through a transition of Listening, Learning and Leading. Sometimes we start to lead in our marriage, lead at work, or lead out in an area of our church in north Austin but leadership comes with criticism, and if we receive enough criticism we can find ourselves wanting to drift backward into Learning and Listening.
What do you do when people start giving their opinions about areas where you are trying to lead?
- Remember, people often have problems beyond our knowledge and power.
- Nobody can understand everyone 100% of the time. As leaders, we are limited in our ability, limited in our knowledge, limited in time, therefore, thecall to leadership isn’t keeping everyone happy and avoiding criticism. It’s impossible!
- Remember, God’s Word teaches us leading often times comes with confusion, doubt and insecurity.
- 2 Corinthians 4:8 “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing.”
- Galatians 4:20 “I could wish to be present with you now and to change my
tone, for I am perplexed about you.”
- Remember, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf.
- Romans 8:26 “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God”
- John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another helper that He may be with you forever.”
Leading doesn’t mean you have to have all the answers. If that was the requirement for leadership then none of us could ever step into those roles of leadership. Instead, leadership is simply saying, “I want to help make things better.” It isn’t volunteering to have all the answers but it is a step of faith to help bring questions to the surface, so that everyone starts to work on those questions together. Our hope isn’t that those who follow will praise our name but that through faith in Jesus we have already been presented blameless before the eternal throne of His grace. (Jude 1:24-25)
