Genesis 5 is not a chapter most of us would pick for encouragement. It is a long list of names followed by the same hard sentence: “and then he died.” But every name represents a whole life: work, family, joy, disappointment, and ordinary Tuesday mornings. And then death shows up again.

That may feel bleak, but the Bible is not being cruel. It is being honest. Death is not a problem we can outwork, outsmart, supplement, positive-think, or financially plan our way around. Yet Genesis 5 does not begin with death. It begins with a reminder that men and women are made in the likeness of God. The image of God remains. The promise of God remains. Even when death repeats, God is not done.

Then Enoch appears. While the chapter keeps saying “and then he died,” Enoch “walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” The chapter does not explain every detail, but it gives us a wrinkle in the pattern: death will not have the final word. That hope ultimately comes into focus in Jesus. He enters the death Adam’s family cannot escape. He dies. Then He rises. In Christ we do not deny grief. We do not pretend that death is small. But we do grieve as people who know the story is not over.

Genesis 5 also names the ache we know well. Noah’s family longs for rest from the toil of life. That ache is not merely a personal failure or a scheduling problem. It is a human problem. We were made for life with God. So perhaps the invitation is not to make every ordinary part of life feel extraordinary. It is to walk with God. And, when work is tiring, prayers feel unanswered, a relationship is hard, and the future is unclear, we can be sure, death is coming, but in Christ, death is not the end.

Where is one ordinary part of your life where you can walk with God today?
