We all have an escape plan in life. If this person would change, if this job would settle down, if we could get through this season, then maybe we could finally breathe. We tell ourselves relief is just one solved problem away. But the finish line keeps moving, doesn’t it? Especially in a city like Austin!

Genesis 6–7 gives us a story about judgment, an ark, and a flood. But underneath those familiar details is a question we still carry: Where can we find rescue?

The Problem Is Bigger Than We Think

Genesis describes a world filled with violence and corruption. This is not a small problem that needs a little improvement. Death and darkness have worked their way through humanity. The word translated “corrupt” carries the idea of ruin or self-destruction. We recognize that pattern. And, we chase something we believe will give us rest, only to discover it can’t hold the weight of our hopes.

God sees all of humanity sitting under this weight, and He takes it seriously. That can feel uncomfortable for us today, but a God who never confronts violence, exploitation, and evil would not be loving. Biblical judgment means God refuses to let destruction continue forever.

The Rescue Comes From God

In the middle of the warning, God provides an ark, which means Noah has work to do, but the rescue doesn’t depend on Noah’s ingenuity or strength. God gives Noah the plan, and establishes the covenant. He brings the animals, He provides, and when the time comes, He closes the door behind Noah.

Noah is not saving himself. He is trusting the rescue God has provided. That thread leads us to Jesus. Noah and his family were rescued through a wooden ark, but today we are offered rescue through a wooden cross. This is why Jesus’ life, death and resurrection is so important.  It is at the cross that Jesus steps into our death and our darkness, takes our judgment upon Himself, and rises to give us forgiveness and life.

We don’t have to build our own way out. We don’t have to clean ourselves up enough to be worthy. We couldn’t even if we tried.  Therefore, God’s Word and God’s Spirit calls out to us to turn to Jesus, and put our trust in Him.

Trust Before the Rain

Noah entered the ark before the first drop fell. For seven days, he waited. Imagine the questions. Imagine the looks from people outside. Imagine wondering whether obedience had made his life harder instead of easier. Faith often feels like that. We forgive before the relationship changes, because God’s Word calls us to forgive. He equips us through His Spirit to forgive. And, in those moments, we are trusting He will work in ways we don’t always understand. The relief isn’t that every circumstance immediately changes. Instead, the relief is knowing our rescue is held by Jesus, not by our ability to control the outcome, and that brings us a rest that can only come from Him.

Take One Faithful Step

Where are you trying to create your own rescue right now? Name that place honestly. Then choose one concrete act of trust this week: confess what you have been hiding, ask someone to pray with you, forgive the person you keep replaying in your mind, or stop long enough to remember that God is working while you sleep. God sees our sin and takes it seriously. God provides our rescue in Jesus. We respond by trusting Him and taking the next faithful step.
