How many times have we said, “I just need a change of scenery”? A different job, city, relationship, or church. After all, wouldn’t it be fun to live tat the Domain in Austin for a little bit? And then six months later, there we are, bringing some of the same struggles into a brand-new setting. What do we do when the scenery changes and the same problems keep showing up in us?
Genesis 9 brings us into that tension. The flood is over. Noah and his family have survived. The earth is opening up before them. You can almost hear the optimism: finally, a fresh start! Then Noah gets drunk. Shame enters the family. Relationships fracture. The crisis is over, but people are still peopling.
God Makes His Promise Before Noah Fails
Before we read about Noah’s failure, we hear the Lord establish His covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature. He promises never again to destroy all flesh through a flood. He gives the rainbow as the sign of that commitment. Notice whose faithfulness carries the promise.
God does not say, “As long as your family keeps everything together, I will keep My word.” He binds Himself to His promise. Noah’s failure does not cancel that covenant. That matters because the Lord knew what was in the human heart when He made His promise. Noah’s failure did not surprise Him. Ours does not surprise Him either.
Our Failure Is Serious. His Grace Is Real.
Genesis 9 also reminds us that human life is precious because people bear God’s image. That includes the person who frustrates us, disagrees with us, or has nothing to offer us. We do not get to dismiss someone’s dignity because loving them is inconvenient. So God’s faithfulness does not mean our sin is harmless. Noah’s choices bring shame and pain into his family.
We know something about that. We have said things we wish we could take back. We have returned to habits we promised to leave behind. And then shame starts talking: “Get yourself together. Then you can come back to Jesus.” But how long would that take? How clean would be clean enough?
Come Back to the Light
The promise to Noah preserves a world that still needs rescue. The fuller answer to our sin comes in Jesus. He lived the righteous life we have not lived, died for our sin, and rose from the dead. Through faith in Him, we receive forgiveness and a righteousness we could never earn. That grace gives us a reason to confess. We can tell the truth because our hope rests in His finished work. We can repent because we belong to Him. We can move toward the people we have hurt and begin taking responsibility.
When someone has walked in the light of Jesus, why would they want to settle down in the darkness? There is joy, freedom, and peace in walking with Him. His forgiveness draws us back into that life. This is also why we need a church family. We need people who know us well enough to ask, “Where are you?” People who can hear an honest answer and encourage us to take the next step toward Jesus.
One Honest Step This Week
Name one area you have been hiding from God or from someone you trust. Bring it to Jesus in prayer today. Then tell one mature Christian what is happening and ask them to walk with you as you repent. If you have hurt someone, identify one concrete step toward making it right.
You do not have to repair yourself before you come to Jesus. Come to Him, and trust Him as you take the next faithful step.
At North Village Church, we want to be a church family where people can be known and encouraged to walk in the light. If you are in North Austin and need someone to pray with you, reach out or join us on Sunday.
