At North Village Church, we are always talking about the importance of Jesus, but what about all those arguments for how Jesus is a waste of time?

In our new blog series, ‘How to Respond When Someone Says’, we are providing you with Biblical ways to respond when some argues against your Faith in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Part 2: How to respond when someone says: Christianity is Outdated.

Is Christianity is outdated? Does it simply need to catch up with history.   After all, it has been around a long time, so are there areas of Christianity that don’t apply for today?

Is Christianity is outdated and does Christianity need to catch up with history?

  • Can we keep the Sunday worship, singing, and just soften our views on sexuality?
  • What about the roles of men and women?
  • What about politics?
  • What about the poor?
  • What about racism?
  • What about abortion?

These are common responses we hear today, but…

  • Do you remember when you were young and you would go to a soda machine and put a little bit of every drink into your cup?  It was so exciting but kind of horrible at the same time.  The idea of Christianity being outdated is kind of like those soda machine drinks.  We are blending a bunch of beliefs together that are popular in our culture today but not very helpful in the end.
  • Second, the belief that Christianity is outdated is called Progressive Christianity.  Progressive Christianity is a rejection of key beliefs in Christianity:
      • Jesus isn’t God in the flesh but a normal human being who did great things.
      • Christianity isn’t unique but just one of many spiritual paths.
      • Jesus’ death on the cross didn’t have any supernatural benefits.
      • The supernatural in general is avoided.
      • The bible is just a collection of important writings instead of God’s Word.
      • The purpose of the church is to serve the poor and speak out against injustice.

It’s okay for a person to hold to these beliefs but it would be better for that person to create a completely different belief system.  It isn’t Christianity.  It is inconsistent with Jesus, the Apostles, the early church and the last 2,000 years of what followers of Jesus have believed.

It doesn’t mean that every follower of Jesus is going to vote the same way, live the same way, and believe everything 100% but followers of Jesus do need to agree on core beliefs of Jesus.

Jesus is God. Jesus was born of the virgin.  Jesus lived a perfect life.   Jesus died for our sin.  Jesus conquered death in the resurrection.  Jesus is returning to make all things new.  When you drift from these core beliefs you’re not updating Christianity.  You are creating something completely different.
